Chinese New Year in Binondo

ARCH OF GOODWILL

Binondo was created by Spanish Governor Luis Pérez Dasmariñas as a permanent settlement for Chinese immigrants It is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594.

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity." Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes “ampao”. Chinese New Year's Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, literally "evening of the passing".

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian. Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people.

CHINESE PARISH

While we’re chatting on facebook, I asked her if she would go to Binondo for the Chinese New Year and she said yes because she want to witness the celebration of Chinese New Year pero hindi daw siya mahilig sa mga festivals, iyong mga crowded places, pero baka siguro para may maisulat lang kaya pumunta tama ba ma’am Emm? Hahaha joke.

Emm is a mountaineer and a travel blogger, and I’m an avid reader of her blog, the author of Emmthepinaytrekker. When we were there in Binondo we attended a mass in a Chinese catholic church and we experienced to put Chinese incense in the altar and we also received a red envelope known as “ampao” and the red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and was supposed to ward off evil spirits.

DRAGON AND LION DANCE

After the mass we strolled around the busy streets of Binondo and it was crowded and noisy because of the sounds of drumbeats, the clang of cymbals and also the firecrackers.

FOOD TRIP

When we were hungry, I suggested to try the fried siopao because even me I  haven’t any idea how it looks like. My imagination was like the dough is crusty but I was wrong when I saw it was soft and it doesn’t require a sauce. It’s so yummy for only 15.00, and then we saw a stall selling fresh lumpia sa totoo lang ayaw ko ng lasa ng fresh lumpia but still napabili parin ako pero yung nakain namin masarap matamis for only 50.00,  While I’m busy eating my lumpia someone grab my bag gulat pa ako akala ko snatcher, si ma’am Weng(ByahengjologsLakwatsera) lang pala akala kung sino na.

At Estero we waited for more than 30 minutes for a vacant table nakakangalay lang talaga tumayo ng matagal ang daming tao walang mapwestuhan dapat mong bantayan yung patapos na.

Our last foodtrip destination was Delicious restaurant we ordered maki and machang, I don’t have any idea kung ano itsura or lasa ng pagkain, yung maki parang lasang beef pares at yung machang parang suman na hindi matamis hindi ko maintidihan ang lasa.

Andame mo kinain, takaw ah! Haha..
