Falls Hopping in Laguna - Talay falls, Hulugan falls and Taytay/Imelda falls

I saw the stunning picture of Hulugan falls in flicker a year ago, then I researched in google if there’s a blog about this waterfalls but unfortunately I can’t find any travel guide going there. So, I emailed the owner of the picture and its almost 2 weeks before he replied to my message. We had a short conversation then he shared to me his complete travel guides and tips on how to get there yet I’m a bit hesitant if I'll go since I don’t know who I will invite for this adventure. Few months of planning for this trip, I received a message from sir JP and he asked me if I want to visit Hulugan falls. Luckily he's also chasing this waterfalls and as he said "bago dagsain ng tao itong lugar na ito dapat puntahan na natin ito." We always planned this adventure even before but we encounter bad weather whenever we intended to set our trip, and sometimes our time conflicts due to prior commitment and different set of travels.

I was disappointed when I saw a picture of Hulugan falls in a facebook group, a viral promotion of this waterfalls. And the sad part is, the place is crowded according to a traveler friend.

I received a message in facebook from Juyviel-girlfriend of my friend, Gab. Gab is my friend since we were in college, he is my hiking buddy when I was newbie. Juyviel wanted to surprise Gab by visiting any waterfalls that is accessible so I suggested the Hulugan falls and sent her the sample itinerary I have.

We set the birthday surprise to Gab with his close friends since high school. He had no idea who will accompany them going to Hulugan falls. We set the event in November 22, 2015, just 2 days before his exact birth day. A pre-celebration with his close friends and his sweet partner.

We met at HM transport at Cubao terminal around 4:00AM, gaya ng dati late na naman si Gab.. wala nang pinagbago, hehehe. He was surprised when he saw his high school friends in terminal, as always, tulala! Haha. Hikking is not a type of activity that they enjoy, maybe thats the reason why Gab's face looks more surprised. Hehe

Barangay San Salvador

Kapitan house registration area

Guides are mandatory, we registered and paid 15.00 for the registration fee at barangay captain house. I’m not sure why the transaction is around the vicinity of their house not in barangay hall. Hmmm..

At 8:00AM we started our hike, after the rough road we entered at the forest, and that was the start of the challenge. The rain poured during our hike that caused the slippery and muddy trail going to Talay falls.

Aside from slippery and muddy trail, muscle cramps is one of our fear, we need to control and balance our weight so that our feet will not slip onto the trail.

One of her signature pose hehehe

We crossed a water stream, three times as far as I can remember. Haha. Thankfully, we reached the Talay falls by 9:05AM.

Sweet moment with Arman

We were so happy because we're the first group arrived in Talay falls and we had a lot of time to take solo picture with the waterfall.

Emo moment

Oh yeah boodle fight

Our guide advised us that there’s no table in Hulugan falls and much better to take our early lunch in Talay falls. He also added that it’s more spacious here and we can set our boodle fight to celebrate Gab's birthday.

At 10:00AM we continued our hike going to Hulugan falls, our guide said that it will only take 30-minutes of hike but sad to say the rain poured more stronger that time that tested again our patience to hike a very slippery trail. My concern was more on the other friends of Gab than on my loving partner. She's already a hard core. Hehe. Gab's friends are all first timer, I need to assist them and remind all the time that they need to be extra careful and watch their steps.

We were exhausted, and at last from afar we saw our reward, the gigantic waterfalls! We're just few tumblings away so we took our selfie with the stunningly beautiful Hulugan waterfalls as our background. When we're almost near, a big crowd is already there, just like a fiesta scene in the area. I felt so sad, no control in terms of headcount or the entire crowd in the area. We didn't had that much of fun, we just stayed less than an hour. Locals said that it's much better to go there during weekdays, better luck next time guys.

It's 1:00PM when arrived at the exit/registration area since we encountered traffic of tourists along the trail. It felt more disgusting when we saw groups of tourists going down to visit the Hulugan falls. They’re bringing their pets, some are wearing flipflops that is not advisable in terms of trekking because there are a lot sharp stones and it looks like they are going to the beach. I hope that the barangay official would provide a short briefing to the tourists and discuss the DO’s and DONT's, not only to collect money! Some part of the trail are technical and the worst part? I saw garbage and plastic wrappers along the way.

How to commute going to Hulugan falls Talay falls and Aliw falls:
Ride a bus going to Sta Cruz, HM transport in Cubao beside at the back of Mang Inasal across the Five Star terminal. Or Jac Liner and DLTB in Gil Puyat buendia terminal going to Sta. Cruz Laguna. At Sta Cruz ride a jeepney that will pass Barangay San Salvador Luisiana

Taytay/Imelda falls
Our group decided to leave Hulugan falls and visit the other waterfall in Laguna, the Taytay/Imelda falls. We waited a jeepney bound to Lucban and we informed the conductor that we'll drop off in Luisiana town proper where we can ride a jeepney going to Majayjay Laguna. Then from Majayjay, we rode another jeepney directly to Taytay falls but the scheduled trip going to Taytay falls is 4:00PM which is a last trip from Majayjay going to Taytay falls and the Last trip going to Majayjay terminal from Taytay falls is 5:00PM. If you missed of these scheduled trip you need to hire a trike, I'm not sure though their rate.

I read some reviews of this waterfalls and indeed it is very clean, the water is too cold and so refreshing just enough after our very tiring and challenging hike at Talay falls and Hulugan falls.

To me, it is better to stay and spend more time in Taytay falls, but sadly we don’t have enough time to stay much longer because we have to go to work the next day. According to pinoymountaineer blog, Imelda/Taytay falls has 12 meters height. You will register and pay 20.00 day and and 35.00 for an overnight.

How to commute from Barangay Salvador Luisiana to Taytay/Imelda falls:
Ride a jeep that will pass the Luisiana town proper, then from Luisiana town proper ride a jeep going to Majayjay town proper, from Majayjay terminal ride again another jeep directly to Taytay falls but expect the time of departure for each jeep.

How to commute from Manila to Taytay/Imelda falls:
From Buendia, Pasay, ride the the bus DLTB going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Fare is P140.00. Travel time is 2-3 hours depending on the traffic in Calamba and Los Banos, Laguna. Then, alight at Sta. Cruz and ride the tricycle to Sta. Cruz market (loob ng palengke). Ride the jeep going to Majayjay. Fare is P35.00. Reaching the town of Majayjay, ride the jeep going to Taytay Falls. Fare is P16/pax. The availability of the jeepney ride is from 6 am - 10 am only. After the said hours, you have to rent the tricycle for P700.00. more info going to Taytay falls by http://junvillegas.blogspot.com
